STATISTICS OF LYME

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdoferi, was first described more than 40 years ago and is now the most common illness spread by a bug bite; it infects more than 300,000 Americans each year. In 2015, it was the sixth most common Nationally Notifiable disease.
Symptoms of Lyme disease range from skin rashes, fatigue, and joint pain to heart disease, neurological issues and death. Researchers at the Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center at Johns Hopkins University have shown that about 10 to 20 percent of those infected progress to chronic multi-organ illness. Patients can face months and even years of disability.
Recently it was estimated that health care costs for Lyme disease patients exceed $1 billion per year, according to Dr. John Aucott of Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
